The Good Life

January 19, 2009

I’ve just started reading The Good Life by Scott and Helen Nearing.  I think that they are one of the original back-to-the-landers.  I don’t know if I could do what they did, they build their own houses little by little, ect.  But it is really interesting how they were able to live off of their land.  I have no where near as much land as they do, and way less time, but I do think there are things to be learned from them.  I mean I do like my running water, and being able to turn on the heat when it gets really cold, but I do find what the Nearing’s have done very inspiring.  Although things may be not exactly how I want, I am lucky in a lot of ways…

I do have the possibility to plant a vegetable garden, and probably one that is larger then what a lot of people have.

We do have the possibility to make some changes in our house, improving it for the better.

We can make our home more energy efficient, thus saving money and energy.

We are lucky to have a house in these turbulent times.  Worse comes to worse we do have possibilities.  Even if it does mean battling with the French adminstration to add on to our house, or something of the like.

We aren’t hungry and don’t risk to be at any time in the near future, although we do have to work on leaving less waste.

Oh, and I have the best dog ever!
